Is it permissible for a menstruating woman to write Qur’aanic verses?

I like to if a woman is allowed to write Sura in Arabic during mentural cycle.

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

It is permissible for a menstruating woman, and also a woman
who is bleeding following childbirth (nifaas) to recite Qur’aan without
touching it. For more information please see the answer to question no.
2564.

Secondly:

It is permissible for a menstruating woman, and also a woman
who is bleeding following childbirth (nifaas) to write Qur’aanic verses, on
the condition that she does not touch the letters, because the prohibition
only has to do with touching the Mushaf, and writing is not touching.

It says in al-Jawharah al-Nayyirah, which is a Hanafi
book (1/31):

It is makrooh for a person who is junub or a menstruating
woman to write down Qur’aan if he or she touches the slate or chalk. But if
he or she places it on the ground and writes without putting his or her hand
on the written letters, it was nothing wrong with that. End quote.

It is permissible for one who is in a state of impurity, or
even a dhimmi, to write it without touching it because the prohibition, as
stated above, applies to touching it, and this is not touching.

End quote from Kashshaaf al-Qinaa‘, 1/135

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked:

We are female students in the girls’ college and we have to
memorise some Qur’aan. Sometimes the tests come during one’s menstrual
period. Is it acceptable to write the soorah on a piece of paper and
memorise it or not?

He replied:

It is permissible for the woman who is menstruating or
bleeding following childbirth to recite Qur’aan according to the more
correct of the two scholarly opinions… The same applies to the piece of
paper on which Qur’aan is written if necessary.

End quote from Majmoo‘ Fataawa Ibn Baaz, 10/209

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) was
asked: Is it permissible to write some verses on the chalkboard without
having wudoo’? What is the ruling on touching the chalkboard on which those
verses are written?

He replied:

It is permissible to write Qur’aan without wudoo’ so long as
one does not touch it. As for touching the chalkboard on which those verses
are written, the Hanbali fuqaha’ say it is permissible for a boy to touch
the slate on which verses have been written in the places that are free of
writing, i.e., so long as his hand does not touch the letters – does the
chalkboard come under this heading or not? In my view this is a matter for
which there is no definite answer.

The true Salafis are the followers of the path of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and his Companions

We want to know what Salafiyyah is as a manhaj (path or methodology), and can we claim to belong to it? Can we criticise those who do not belong to it or who object to the word Salafi and so on?.

Praise be to Allaah.

The Salafis are the followers of the way of the Prophet
(blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and his Companions, because
they are the ones who came before us (the Salaf) and who advanced ahead of
us, so their followers are the Salafis.

With regard to taking Salafiyyah as a path or methodology
which a person follows and regards as misguided those Muslims who differ
with him, even if they are following the truth, and taking Salafiyyah as a
partisan path is undoubtedly contrary to Salafiyyah. All of the Salaf or
early generations called for unity and harmony around the Sunnah of the
Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and did not regard as
misguided those who differed with them with on the basis of their
understanding and interpretation, except when it came to matters of ‘aqeedah
or beliefs, because they regarded those who differed with them in these
matters as misguided. But with regard to practical issues they were often
easy-going.

But some of those who followed the path of Salafiyyah in
modern times started to regard as misguided everyone who differed from them,
even if that person was correct, and some of them adopted a partisan
approach like that of other parties which claimed to belong to the religion
of Islam. This is something that is to be denounced and cannot be approved
of, and it should be said to these people: Look at the way of the righteous
early generation (al-salaf al-saalih), what did they used to do? Look at
their way and how open hearted they were in the case of differences in which
ijtihaad is justified (and differences of opinion are allowed). They even
used to differ concerning major issues, matters of belief and practical
issues. You will find some of them, for example, denying that the Messenger
(blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) saw his Lord, whereas others say
that he did see Him. You will see some of them saying that what will be
weighed on the Day of Resurrection is deeds, whereas others will say that it
is the books of deeds that will be weighed. You will also see them differing
a great deal with regard to matters of fiqh having to do with marriage,
shares of inheritance, buying and selling, and other issues. Yet despite all
that they did not regard one another as misguided.

Salafiyyah in the sense of being a particular party with its
distinguishing characteristics and in which the members regard everyone else
as misguided, these people have nothing to do with Salafiyyah at all. As for
the Salafiyyah which means following the path of the Salaf in belief, word
and deed, in calling for unity and harmony and mutual compassion and love,
as the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The
likeness of the believers in their mutual love, mercy and compassion is that
of a single body; when one part of it is suffering the rest of the body
joins it in fever and staying awake” -- this is the true Salafiyyah. End
quote.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him).

His female relative has married a man who belongs to the Habashi sect (al-Ahbaash) -- what should he do?

There is a man who has married a female relative of ours, but some time after marriage it became clear that he belongs to the misguided Habashi sect. I hope that you can advise me how to guide him to the straight path and the way of the saheeh Sunnah. May Allaah bless your efforts.

Praise be to Allaah.

We have previously spoken about the Habashi sect and
explained the beliefs that they have that are contrary to the beliefs of Ahl
al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah, in the answer to question number
8571.

A number of scholars have warned against their misguidance
and deviation and some books have been written about that which it would be
good for you to refer to.

With regard to advising this man who belongs to al-Ahbaash,
that should be done by a capable seeker of knowledge (taalib ‘ilm) who has
studied their misguidance and is able to respond to it properly, and who is
also able to explain the beliefs of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah properly. If
that is not possible, then you can give him a book which refutes them
without getting involved in debates or arguments if you is not qualified to
do that, especially in front of common folk who may be influenced by these
ideas.

The advice should be given with wisdom and beautiful
preaching. Some people join this sect out of ignorance of its beliefs and
because they think well of its members, and giving him advice in a harsh
manner may prompt him to adhere more firmly to it and defend it.

Advice should also be given to the wife in an appropriate
manner to beware of the misguidance of this group. We advise you to refer to
this website to find out the truth about the Habashis:

[website is in Arabic and English]

And Allaah knows best.

A young man wants to follow the Sunnah but his father is Shi’i and wants to prevent him from following true guidance. What advice can you give?

I am 15 years old and I have just begun to adhere to the teachings of Islam. The only source I have for learning the religion is Islamic sites on the Internet, like this site of yours, because I do not have anyone who can take me to the mosque, which is 5 miles away from where I live and walking there is very dangerous. In addition to that, my father wants to prevent me from using the Internet so that I will focus more on my studies. He also hates me to read or learn from your site, because he is Shi’i and he says that you will brainwash me. He is insisting on teaching me the Shi’i madhhab, and even their way of praying which I find is very different from the way other Muslims pray. I do not know what I should do now. Can you advise me?.

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly, we praise Allah for having guided you to the
truth, and we ask Him to make you steadfast and help you to attain all
that is good. Remember that you have been greatly blessed, and if you
devote your entire life and wealth for that purpose, that will be little
in return for that blessing. Do you know how many millions of people of
your father’s background worship rocks and human beings? Do you know that
all these people believe that the Qur'aan is distorted and they regard the
Sahaabah as kaafirs, apart from a few of them? Do you know that these
people have revived the shirk of Jaahiliyyah and added more forms of shirk
than were known in the past?

We do not call people to anything except worship of Allah,
may He be exalted, and we also call people to venerate and respect the
Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and not to impugn his
honour or slander his Companions. As we love all of the Sahaabah and pray
that Allah be pleased with them, and we seek to draw closer to Allah by
loving them, we also love and respect the people of the Prophet's household
(Ahl al-Bayt), and we seek to draw closer to Allah by loving them.

Secondly:

With regard to your dealings with your father, what we advise
you is:

1.
Be kind in your dealings with
him as much as possible.

2.
Strive to serve him as much as
you are able, and do not spare any effort in doing so. Do not withhold any
help or kind treatment from him.

3.
Focus on your studies and do
not let your neglect of them be a cause of you losing your religious
commitment. What we understand from your message is that your father wants
to take steps to prevent you from accessing our site and other beneficial
Islamic sites because of your studies. So do not give him that excuse; study
and progress in your studies; close the door to your father’s shaytaan so
that he will not be able to make the issue of your studies a means of
preventing you from following true guidance.

4.
Do not make an open show of
visiting useful Islamic websites in front of him, and do not make an open
show of your following the path of Ahl al-Sunnah in front of him. Even more
important is not arguing and debating with regard to good matters, because
doing that openly may motivate him to prevent you from following the path of
true guidance.

5.
Pray for him and for all of
your family to be guided to the right path. Strive to make this du’aa’ when
you are prostrating and during the last third of the night.

6.
Finally, we advise you to use
wisdom in dealing with your father. If he teaches you to pray in the Shi’i
manner and you cannot reject it, then accept it from him and pretend to
agree with him, but pray in the manner established in the sound Sunnah. With
regard to the way the prayer is done, the matter is broad in scope in sha
Allah, and you come under the heading of one who is forced to do something.
You are at an age when you are not old enough to separate from him, so be
patient until the time comes when you can leave, then if Allah guides your
father before that, you can stay with them, or you can leave and live
independently, so as to protect your religious commitment.

And Allah knows best.

Ruling on listening to Shi‘i nasheeds if they are free of objectionable content

Nowadays Shi‘i nasheeds are widely available, with beautiful voices. They are not about their beliefs and so on; the words are quite ordinary, but they are Shi‘i nasheeds with their usual style. Many people like this style and listen to it. What is the ruling on that? Please note that they do not contain any musical instruments.

Praise be to Allaah.

Listening to these nasheeds -- even if we assume that they
are free of things about which one would have reservations on the basis of
sharee‘ah -- involves a number of evils:

1.

They usually generate in the heart love and admiration for
the munshid (“singer”), which is contrary to how the believer should be,
namely he should hate innovation and those who promote it, and should beware
of them and of feeling inclined towards them.

2.

They may introduce him to something that is contrary to
sharee‘ah without him realizing it, because he likes the voice and is
infatuated with it, so he does not pay attention to the corrupt meaning
conveyed by the voice, and it may settle in his heart without him realizing
it. It is well known that language is the vessel of thoughts, and people’s
language -- let alone their nasheeds and tunes -- may soon instil in him
some of their beliefs, customs and ideas, without him noticing it or paying
attention.

3.

Listening to these “singers” may encourage others to follow
his example and listen to all their nasheeds, without differentiating
between those that contain things that are contrary to sharee‘ah and those
that are free of such things.

Hence we should ignore these nasheeds and avoid even speaking
of them, and we should not increase the number of people who listen to them
or propagate them.

We have previously discussed the prohibition on listening to
the nasheeds of those who follow innovation (bid‘ah) that contain things
that are contrary to sharee‘ah, in the answer to question no.
125645.

We should reduce how much we listen to nasheeds in general,
even if they are songs by righteous people, so that this will not distract
us from the Qur’aan and listening to scholars.

And Allah knows best.

Discussion of the hadeeth, “The Qadariyyah are the Magians of this ummah”

I came across this hadith on the internet The Prophet (صلّى الله عليه وآله وسلّم) said:"To every Ummah there is a magian and the magian of this ummah are those who reject the Qadr [pre-destination]. If anyone amongst them dies, do not attend their funeral, and if anyone amongst them becomes sick don’t visit them and they are Shia-tul Dajjal and it is the right of God to join them with the Dajjal.” (Sunan Abu Dawoud #4072)

And then I went to Sunan Abu Dawud kitab libas and I could not find this hadith (4072) so I was wondering why? Is it authentic or daaef?.

Praise be to Allaah.

This hadeeth was narrated by Abu Dawood in his Sunan
(4961), Kitaab al-Sunnah, Baab fi’l-Qadar:

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with
him) from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) that he
said: “The Qadaris (those
who deny al-qadar) are the Magians of this ummah. If they get sick, do not
visit them and if they die, do not attend (their funerals).

It was also narrated by al-Haakim
(286), al-Bayhaqi (21391), al-Tabaraani in al-Awsat (2494),
al-Baghawi in Sharh al-Sunnah (1/78), Ibn ‘Asaakir in Tareekh
Dimashq (19/62), Ibn Abi ‘Aasim in al-Sunnah (268) and others, from the
hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). It was classed as
saheeh by Ibn al-Qattaan in Bayaan al-Wahm wa’l-Eehaam (5/446) and as
hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood and elsewhere. Al-Safaareeni
said in Lawaa’ih al-Anwaar: It is no less than hasan.

The beginning of it was narrated
via numerous other isnaads. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him)
said:

Something similar was narrated
from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) from Ibn ‘Umar,
Hudhayfah, Ibn ‘Abbaas, Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allah, Abu Hurayrah, ‘Abd-Allah ibn
‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas and Raafi‘ ibn Khadeej.

End quote from Tahdheeb Sunan
Abi Dawood, 2/347

Al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy
on him) said:

They are called Qadariyyah because
they affirmed al-qadar (power of decree) for themselves but they denied it
for Allah, may He be glorified and exalted. They denied that He created
their deeds and affirmed that for themselves. By attributing some acts of
creation to Him but not others they became like the Magians in their belief
in the two principles of light and darkness and that good is the action of
light and evil is the action of darkness.

End quote from al-I‘tiqaad,
p. 245

Al-Khattaabi (may Allah have mercy
on him) said: The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) likened
them to Magians because their views were similar to the views of the Magians
who believe in two principles, light and darkness, and they claimed that
good is the action of the light and evil is the action of darkness, so they
became believers in dualism. Similarly, the Qadaris attribute good to Allah,
may He be exalted, and they attribute evil to someone other than Him, but
Allah, may He be glorified and exalted is the Creator of both good and evil;
neither of them could happen except by His will, so they are attributed to
Him in the sense that He created them and brought them into being, and they
are attributed to the ones who do them of His slaves in the sense that they
commit these actions. End quote.

Seeking help from anyone other than Allaah is shirk

I often hear people saying “Madad ya Rasool-Allaah, Madad ya Sayyidina al-Husayn, madad ya Sayyid yaa Badawi…” and I do not know the meaning of these words.

Praise be to Allaah.

It should be noted that Allaah has created the universe to
worship Him and Him alone. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And I (Allaah) created not the jinn and mankind except
that they should worship Me (Alone)”

[al-Dhaariyaat 51:56]

Allaah sent the
Messengers to call their people to worship Allaah alone (Tawheed) and to
forbid them to associate anything with Him (shirk). Allaah says
(interpretation of the meaning):

“And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad)
but We revealed to him (saying): Laa ilaaha illa Ana [none has the right to
be worshipped but I (Allaah)], so worship Me (Alone and none else)”

[al-Anbiya’ 21:25]

Shirk means directing worship to anyone other than Allaah,
and du’aa’ comes under the heading of worship which must be devoted to
Allaah alone and not directed to anyone else. Hence the Prophet (peace
and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Du’aa’ is worship.” Narrated by
al-Tirmidhi, 2969; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

Asking for madad from anyone other than Allaah, as
mentioned in the question, is a kind of calling upon (or making du’aa’ to)
someone other than Allaah, hence it is a kind of shirk.

It says in Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah (2/193):

The words of some of those who sing nasheed, “Madad ya
sayyidina al-Husayn (Help O our master al-Husayn), madad ya Sayyidah
Zaynab, madad ya Badawi ya Shaykh al-‘Arab, madad ya Rasool
Allaah (O Messenger of Allaah), madad ya awliya’ Allaah (O close
friends – or ‘saints’ – of Allaah),” etc, is major shirk which puts the one
who says it beyond the pale of Islam (Allaah forbid), because it is calling
upon the dead to give them good things, to help them, to ward off danger or
relieve them of harm. That is because what is meant by madad is
giving, help and support. So it as if the person who says, “Madad ya
Sayyid ya Badawi, madad ya Sayyidah Zaynab” etc is saying: Help
us and give us of your bounty, and relieve us of hardship and ward off
calamity from us. This is major shirk. Allaah says, after explaining to His
slaves that He is in control of the universe and that it is subjugated to
Him:

“Such is Allaah, your Lord; His is the kingdom. And those,
whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him, own not even a Qitmeer (the
thin membrane over the date stone).

If you invoke (or call
upon) them, they hear not your call; and if (in case) they were to hear,
they could not grant it (your request) to you. And on the Day of
Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And none can inform
you (O Muhammad) like Him Who is the All-Knower (of everything)”

[Faatir 35:13-14 – interpretation of the meaning]

So He calls their prayers to others shirk.

And Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And who is more astray
than one who calls on (invokes) besides Allaah, such as will not answer him
till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls
(invocations) to them?

And when mankind are
gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), they (false deities) will become
their enemies and will deny their worshipping”

[al-Ahqaaf 46:6]

So Allaah tells us that those who are called upon other than
Him, the Prophets and the righteous, are unaware of the call of those who
call upon them and will never respond to their calls, and they will be their
enemies and will deny their worship of them.

And Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Do they attribute as
partners to Allaah those who created nothing but they themselves are
created?

No help can they give
them, nor can they help themselves.

And if you call them to
guidance, they follow you not. It is the same for you whether you call them
or you keep silent.

Verily, those whom you
call upon besides Allaah are slaves like you. So call upon them and let them
answer you if you are truthful”

[al-A’raaf 7:191-194]

“And whoever invokes (or
worships), besides Allaah, any other ilaah (god), of whom he has no proof;
then his reckoning is only with his Lord. Surely, Al-Kaafiroon (the
disbelievers in Allaah and in the Oneness of Allaah, polytheists, pagans,
idolaters) will not be successful”

[al-Mu’minoon 23:117]

So Allaah tells us that whoever calls upon anyone other than
Allaah, among the dead etc., will never succeed because of his kufr and his
calling upon someone other than Allaah.
